What are those different fireworks called?!
Almost all of us have gazed skyward in wonder as fire meets a multitude of chemicals and creates a dazzling display of color and sound in the night sky. Millions of people flock to parks, stores and even tents every year to partake in shooting or enjoying fireworks. But what are those firework effects called? This year, impress your friends and family by not just saying “oooh I liked that red round thingy” but actually call them by name! In fact, here is the red round thingy along with 10 more popular effects we see in the skies.
.) Rings are a simple and very common effect usually of a single color burning star that breaks into a somewhat symmetrical sphere or circle in the sky. It can have additional effects included as part of it’s display including a “Pistil” or different color center, as well as multiple rings.
.) Crossettes look similar to a Peony or Dahlia at first, then surprise! Each colored star bursts into 4 pieces filling the sky even more with color and light.
.) Brocade is one of the most elegant effects in fireworks, almost always a beautiful, shimmering gold. Brocade’s are also a popular effect to mix with other effect such as colored tips or colored pistils.
.) Chrysanthemum, named after popular flowers is one of the most widely used effects. Featuring a long trail of sparks behind the leading stars, they also are often combined with other effects, usually accenting tips of a pistil.
.) Willows are always a crowd favorite, and often one of the longest lasting effects in the sky, sometimes a single willow shell can seem to hang and droop for almost 10 seconds! While willows are commonly a dim charcoal gold formula, the one below is a bright, crackling willow effect…very popular but not often seen!
.) Dahlia’s are usually a vivid color shell with brighter than average, but fewer stars than similar Peonies. They burn and hang longer in the sky.
.) Ghosting, or Ghost Shells are an extremely high end effect in fireworks, usually only seen in very expensive displays or even pyrotechnic competitions. The stars are meticulously arranged and timed to wave back and forth in the sky and even change colors and effects!
.) Horsetail, also known as a waterfall shell is smaller style break, but none the less impressive as it elegantly falls back toward earth leaving a bright trail of sparks behind.
.) Palms aren’t reallya groundbreaking name for the effect…just named after what it looks like! A pyrotechnic palm tree flying in the night sky. If your lucky, your watching from a warm beach somewhere!
.) Strobing shells can be some of the most dramatic fireworks in a display. They are very bright and often light up the ground for a long ways around the launch site. Strobe shells come in many colors but are most popular in red, white and green Other colors you might get luck to see are orange, lemon and multi color.
